Share the goodness!

infollution

There is too much noise in the world.

We hear about environmental pollution every day, but in my day to day life I feel more impacted by information pollution.

Radio screaming, T.V. un-demanded, free junk newspapers, intrusive advertising, email forwards… way too much.

If our thoughts create our reality, we are not doing a good job at keeping them clean.

Babbling

I speak too much.

I babble. Go on too long. Make a show.

I’m not too fond of entertainment shows. People get hooked on all kinds of TV series, always a new one coming up. I beg them not to lend me their DVDs, lest I become another cult follower. All is good in moderation, but these products are addictive by design.

It turns out I was creating content at BookVIM, sometimes for the sake of it.

Videos sharing my ideas, the ideas of others, and sometimes a blurry mix.

As I sat down last Sunday to brainstorm a new chapter, I found my blank sheet was perfect. I didn’t have anything to add.

Sure, I could. But should I?

Quantity

Since I decided not to promote this site, which was taxing me several hours a day, I no longer required a steady stream of new chapters to create a following.

This meant the Quantity factor was factored out.

I was left with Quality.

I started evaluating along these lines…

Would I rather have 5 mediocre noisy chapters a week, or one good chapter?

Taken further,

Would I rather have one good chapter a week, or 1 outstanding post whenever it comes?

The noise fades away with time. True value does not expire.

It’s not complicated to create a lot of content. Tiring perhaps, but anyone can do it. Pushing buttons to get a reaction, creating noise, and “connecting” with everyone on the Internet with the hopes that some of them will come back to your site… it’s doable. It comes with an expensive price tag though:

- Demands many precious hours every week (and it’s not that fun!).

- Pollutes the World with low quality information. Noise = Info-CO2.

Silence

It stands to reason one should not talk unless it is better than silence.

Please, if you see me rambling on, hit me hard so I can correct course.

Don’t come here waiting for dull entertainment anymore.

Do come here for the occasional valuable insight, and maybe some emotional juice.

I deeply appreciate each one of your visits. It’s humbling.

I just like a cleaner world.

Thank you.

Great words and thoughts. And congratulations for such a conclusion. Very brave when it has such an impact in your work.
BUT (you know there is always a but):
    1) why don´t you share this whith more people? why did someone had to email me this instead of you letting me know about it? Why can´t you, or me, tell all my friends you are writing these things? I know you want quality, and that your objective is not mass public. But for me, you might be being a little selfish. Everyone should have the oportunity to know they can read and listen to you, and learn from it. In my opinion, if there is something that makes me grow, I want to share with as many people as possible, so the world that surrounds me grows with me as well. And the final result is much more positive. (I could go on, but quality, no quantity ;) )
    2. True that silence is VERY important, and sais a lot. But sometimes we have to say whatever, or listen whatever, even if it makes no sense. Probably thoses useless words makes us think,or are a try for something more interesting. Or maybe not. But we would be in silence too many times if we followed that sentence. However, as I say, a little more silence inside and outside of us would make us so good!!
THANKS again for sharing your thoughts, and making me think. (As you see, I should practice more the “quality” versus “quantity”! hahahaa)

    Ola hombre,
I agree 1000% w/ you about the mass quantity of sensory stimulation occurring. I think that it is imperative to be selective of what you allow into your personal area. It is somewhat like eating, there are foods that some cultures adore yet treat my system poorly and to try everything, though appealling, does not allow ones system to become comfortable (digesting properly) what one finds pleasing. Is there a way to notify readers when you have produced some work? I would like a heads up. Thank you and have a great weekend.

@mom: thank you, and thanks for apparently spreading the word :)

    @tony: cheers!

@Cris: Thanks for sharing your take on this…

    1) This is what I mentioned takes a LOT of time. The alternative strategy is to create something of very high quality that people will want to share. It seems to have worked to some extent in this case.

    2) Nothing wrong with healthy socializing and going with the flow every now and then. However I think you know what I meant. Most often it’s like our minds are flooded with unconscious thoughts and we just vomit them to avoid the sobering of silence.

@Uncle Mike!: I think you are spot on with the food metaphor, it is exactly the same. People don’t realise the information (which is interpreted through thoughts) we let in impacts our mind, just as a 3 double cheeseburgers leave or body heavy.

      Ola Miguel,

I revisited to sign up for alerts of your work. Good idea. I want to comment on point 2 of your response to your mom. It is estimated that the brain is potentially sensing 3-4 million different pieces of info, (depending on the circumstances) every second. Colors, shapes, sounds, textures ect: There is an excellent series on US public television you may be able to access via PC (if you have any free time) (PBS.com) covering the latest tests/findings about the human brain. Quite enlightening and also amazing. We hope all is well. Abrazos
